What’s Your One Word? Set Your Intention for 2016!

As you consider your  resolutions for the New Year, stop a moment and reflect on your intention. What’s the one word that crystallizes your intent for 2016?

I Choose to Unplug!

As I wrote in the chapter Define Your Life Purpose: Setting Intentions from “Working with Wisdom,” “An intention is the broad, bright light that leads the way for more specific goals you set. It is the sacred promise made between your soul and the universe to take responsibility and assure the quality of what you will manifest.”

Debbie Ford, the author of “The Best Year of Your Life,” describes it this way: “Intent is to humans what software is to a computer. When installed in your psyche, intent gives you access to new capabilities, which opens up new realities.”

So, how do you set your intention and then what do you do with it?

First, even before you consider what you want to do, have or be in the New Year, decide how you want to feel. Is there a challenge you want to overcome that will require a specific skill or quality? What are you passionate about? What does the world need right now where you can contribute?

Second, consider some of these intentions or come up with your own:

  • Balanced
  • Energized
  • Love
  • Peaceful
  • Wise
  • Purposeful
  • Free
  • Surrender
  • Trust
  • Grace
  • Compassion
  • Accept
  • Joyful
  • Prosperous
  • Healthy
  • Grateful
  • Reflect
  • Mindful
  • Curious
  • Breathe
  • Smile
  • Accept
  • Unplug
  • Give
  • Shine
  • Aware

Next, craft an affirmation that gives your intention power. It could be as simple as, “I am …” or “Today, I choose to …” Write it down and post it where you will see it every day. On your bathroom mirror, the dashboard of your car or by your computer screen. Make it the screenshot on your phone. Or make it into jewelry. Check out MyIntent. Finally, say your intent to yourself, out loud and, when appropriate, share it with others. Encourage them to choose and use their own intent.  When faced with opportunities and challenges in 2016, refer to your intent for guidance. Ask, “Does this choice align with my intent?”

So, what’s your intention for 2016?  For me, I choose to unplug whenever I can. To spend more time reflecting in nature and learn new ways to control and manage technology–from emails, my cell phone and TV–and not let it control and manage me. Can you relate? I’ll be less stressed, more creative, and more connected to what and who really matter.

I’d love for you to share your one-word intention below. Here’s to an intentional, sensational New Year!

My word for 2016 is embrace, to fully embrace God in every aspect of my life and let Him work His miracles. Stop trying to control the outcome. Go with the flow and experience the power of God working in my life.

    Hi Tricia,

    Hope you are doing GREAT.

I loved your recommendation to choose one word of intention for 2016. A few years ago Nido Qubein recommended a book by Lloyd Reeb called “From Success to Significance: When the Pursuit of Success Isn’t Enough.” One thing the author asked was “What’s the word in your box?” He was talking about focus and purpose. Like you, he challenged people to distill their purpose into one word so that thought would become deeply planted. His word was Jesus. But mine was different. I knew instantly my word was beauty. When I got that clarity, my life opened up. Consciously, I made different choices with beauty in mind. My stress evaporated and I was happier. New people and situations showed up. I met and married an artist, moved to Santa Fe, NM (one of the most gorgeous spots in America), and am now living a wonderful life. I have more peace now than in any previous period in my life. Though my life has always been, more or less, good, I can’t recall ever being as happy as I am now.

Anyhow, what I’m saying is your advice is spot on. Keep spreading this concept. It changes lives for the better.

    I’m a fan of yours.

    Doug

    Tricia,
You are always so inspiring. My word for 2016 is “purposeful”. Every day I will choose to make a difference, be kind and be compassionate.
